Vancouver’s first Big Print Project was a visually striking event designed to highlight printmaking as a dramatic public event. Drawing attention to the potential of large-scale wood-relief prints, it brought together a group of well-known artists in creating and printing a suite of woodcuts.
The Radius mural represents three distinct communities that converge in the Downtown Eastside: Aboriginal, Chinese and Japanese. The mural was conceived to reflect themes of origin and place, weaving together material gathered from outreach workshops into the design. The team of artists and mentored youth come from each of these communities. Located at the Firehall Arts Centre.
The Hall occupies a prominent location in Strathcona, a community in East Vancouver that is home to hundreds of artists and host to numerous arts festivals and performances throughout the year. This historic building,originally constructed in 1937 by the Croatian community, was purchased in 1947 by the Federation of Russian Canadians to enhance their community and culture. Blue Cabin Public Launch August 25, 2019
grunt gallery, Other Sights for Artists’ Projects, and Creative Cultural Collaborations (C3) are thrilled to announce the public launch and first open house of the historic Blue Cabin Floating Artist Residency on August 25, 2019, at the Plaza of Nations in False Creek. This event is free and open to the public.
Projects
I started with a grandiose obsession on how to replicate the moving
of ocean water as two high incoming tides flooded the inlet each day.
And on its quiet surface were to be hundreds of wild geese.
The Gathering mural project resulted in the completion of seven panels of murals; two diptychs and one triptych. Collectively, they pay tribute to the cultural contributors in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, a community that is frequently characterized by its tragedies rather than successes. The murals make steps towards shifting that perception by highlighting the community’s cultural leaders and their strengths, and accomplishments. These works provide a compassionate, ‘time-capsule’ lens on the past and present.
From the early 1900s to the late 1960s, the East Side neighborhood of Strathcona was home to Vancouver’s first and only black community.
The ten video stories of Black Strathcona (2014) celebrate some of the people and places that made the community vibrant and unique.
